Allied Schools - Business of Weatherization and Retrofitting Course Outline
The green movement is making a prevalent impact nationwide on the way corporations, government and local communities conduct daily activities. But there's another segment of the population whose interest in ‘going green' could create an estimated 87,000 new jobs in the clean energy economy (source: U.S. Department of Energy). We're talking about homeowners.
Nationwide, homeowners are more educated than ever before about the advantages of being energy conscious. As a result, they are pursuing ways to save money on rising energy costs by weather-proofing their homes - which can reduce heating bills by 32% and overall energy bills by about $350 per year at current prices (U.S. Department of Energy).
And there's more good news - under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, about $8 billion has been invested into state and local weatherization and energy efficiency programs. This means the Department of Energy will partner with state and local governments to put thousands of Americans to work and save families hundreds of dollars per year on their energy bills (DOE).

What is Weatherization?
Weatherization is the process of making a building more energy efficient. This goal is obtained by implementing a variety of energy conservation techniques, which in turn, result in lower energy bills and an overall, better quality of living.
What Does a Weatherization and Retrofitting Professional Do?
Weatherization involves implementing a range of energy efficiency strategies that encompass a building, including a thorough audit of all air ducts, electrical systems, heating and cooling systems and installation of energy efficient products.
As a weatherization and retrofitting professional, you will assess building retrofits, including insulation, doors, windows and lighting, to ensure retrofitting compliance standards are met.
Why is Weatherization and Retrofitting Important?
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the construction and operation of residential and commercial buildings in the U.S. accounts for 39% of our total energy use.
That's more than the industrial sector at 33% and the transportation sector at 28% of total U.S. energy use. (Source: Center of Excellence)
Buildings are major energy consumers and contributors to green house gases. By implementing simple weatherization measures, a building's energy consumption can be significantly reduced.
What is the Career Outlook for Weatherization and Retrofitting Professionals?
Weatherization and retorfitting are major sectors of the U.S. clean energy economy. Just take a look at the facts:
- With an investment of about $5 billion through the Weatherization Assistance Program and about $3 billion for the State Energy Program, the Department of Energy will partner with state and local governments to put 87,000 Americans to work and save families hundreds of dollars per year on their energy bills. (Source: U.S. Dept. of Energy)
- The Weatherization Assistance Program will allow an average investment of up to $6,500 per home in energy efficiency upgrades and will be available for families making up to 200% of the federal poverty level. (Source: U.S. Dept. of Energy)
- The State Energy Program funding will be available for rebates to consumers for home energy audits or other energy saving improvements. (Source: U.S. Dept. of Energy)
Trained weatherization and retrofitting professionals will be needed to help implement government programs aimed at assisting low-income families reduce their home's energy consumption.
And as the green movement continues to sweep the nation, homeowners from all economic backgrounds will likely pursue the financial and environmental benefits of having an energy efficiency home.
You can be the one that helps these families obtain the greener lifestyles they seek. Prepare with Allied and do something amazing with your future.
